Improve Kitchen Ventilation Efficiency

Houston TX -related air pollutants are a significant contributor to indoor pollution in many homes. While effective use of kitchen ventilation can mitigate exposure to these pollutants, it is not widely adopted. To better understand the current availability and usage of cooking ventilation, a nationwide survey was sent to a representative sample of Canadian households. Results from the survey were analyzed to assess cooking methods, availability and usage of kitchen ventilation devices, and willingness to implement mitigation strategies to reduce exposures to these pollutants.

Grease particles from stoves can disperse throughout the kitchen, landing on surfaces and accumulating in cabinets and ceilings. This residue can contribute to moisture, causing mold and mildew. The fumes generated from burning fat and grease can also linger in the air, contributing to unpleasant odors. Depending on the concentration of these chemicals and other variables, proper ventilation can help to minimize or eliminate these odors and pollutants.

Proper ventilation can be achieved using a range hood that vents directly to the outdoors (ducted) or through recirculation (ductless). It is recommended that all gas cooktops have a ducted system to provide adequate ventilation for carbon monoxide, combustion pollutants that can trigger asthma such as nitrogen and sulfur, unburned hydrocarbons and water vapor.

Homes that do not have a direct exhaust ventilation system can still meet local exhaust standards by adding a dampered fresh air intake to the CERV2 that allows the kitchen fan to run at a lower speed, reducing total ventilation airflow while still meeting requirements. For example, Equinox House co-founder Ty Newell’s home utilizes a simple recirculating kitchen ventilation system with a ductless range hood and grease screen filter. This combination of equipment is capable of managing the exhaust requirements for his three bathrooms, laundry room and pantry as well as his 100cfm kitchen requirement.
